Funiculars

Lisbon Elevador da Glória

Lisbon is famously a hilly city, so it has 3 funiculars (elevadors in Portuguese) to help you get around.

Elevador da Glória – the most famous and popular funicular, its lower end is situated at Restauradores Square (Praça dos Restauradores), with its upper end at Rua San Pedro de Alcántara in Bairro Alto, where there’s a great viewpoint giving some of the best views over the city. Following the tragic accident in September 2025 this funicular is currently not in use.

Elevador da Bica – the second most popular funicular, its lower end is on the Rua de São Paulo near the Time Out market, with its upper end on the Calçada do Combro in Bairro Alto.

Elevador do Lavra – the oldest funicular (opened 1884), its lower end is Largo da Anunciada near Restauradores Square, with its upper end on Rua Câmara Pestana, near the Jardim do Torel which has great views over the city.

You can buy tickets individually to ride the funiculars, but as they’re included in the city’s 24 hour combined tram, metro and bus ticket, it makes much more sense to buy one of those. Click here for ticket information.
